SUMMARY:Sweetwater Music Hall presents Victoria George Early Access Album Release Party with David Luning
DESCRIPTION:“I feel like good art is informed by big moments\,” says Northern California singer-songwriter Victoria George. Her new album\, “Wilderness\,” proves the point. Written and recorded in the wake of a life-altering brain cancer diagnosis\, the album is a powerful creative statement from an artist whose sound seamlessly blends country roots and folk storytelling with a hint of pop.\n\nThroughout her career\, George’s voice and songwriting prowess have set her apart from Nashville trends\, even as she shared stages with legends like Willie Nelson\, Brandi Carlile\, and Loudon Wainwright. Her late 2018 release “Victoria George & The High Lonesome” was a rootsy standout\, but when the pandemic hit\, live music everywhere came to a halt and so did George’s momentum.

SUMMARY:Sweetwater Music Hall presents David Nelson Band
DESCRIPTION:The David Nelson Band has been recording and performing around the country since 1994. Their broad musical palette spans the Almost Acoustic style that Nelson played with Jerry Garcia\, through roots rock n roll\, and psychedelic country-rock. The DNB perform David’s compositions (many co-written with Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter)\, select covers\, and several Grateful Dead classics upon which Nelson appeared on the original album releases. These stylistic elements\, combined with plenty of spontaneous free form improvisation\, create a sound that is uniquely David Nelson Band. Though the original songs are mostly written by Nelson\, the development of all the material is a fully collaborative effort. These days the DNB only tour select areas a few times a year\, as the individual band members are in high demand with other successful touring acts. Their loyal and enthusiastic fans relish these special times to reunite at Nelson family gatherings. DNB shows are a joyous reunion for all – a communal gathering where regulars and newcomers all feel part of an extended family. \n\nDavid Nelson – guitar/ vocals – is a founding member of the New Riders of the Purple Sage and long time musical partner of Jerry Garcias dating back to 1962 in the pre-Grateful Dead bluegrass band\, The Wildwood Boys. Nelson was also a member of the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band (and appears on their 1988 album release “Almost Acoustic” and 2010’s “Ragged But Right”) and performed on three Grateful Dead albums – “Aoxomoxoa”\, “Workingmans Dead” & “American Beauty” – playing the iconic electric guitar solo on Box of Rain. Nelson has also performed as a member of Phil Lesh and Friends.\n\nBarry Sless – lead guitar/ pedal steel – currently tours with Bobby Weir and Wolf Bros\, Skeleton Crewe and Moonalice. He was a frequent member of Phil Lesh and Friends touring and local lineups since 2004. He’s toured with Chris Robinsons Green Leaf Rustlers (and appears on their 2020 album release\, From Within Marin)\, Kingfish\, Cowboy Jazz\, and Great American Taxi. Barry is a founding member of DNB.

SUMMARY:Sweetwater Music Hall presents BLUES EXPLOSION featuring THE DYNAMIC MISS FAYE CAROL\, LADY BIANCA\, ALVON JOHNSON\, AND ALABAMA MIKE
DESCRIPTION:JaZzLine INSTITUTE presents Blues Explosion\, a powerhouse lineup featuring four of the finest blues artists from the Bay Area and beyond. Get ready for blues\, blues\, and more blues as this slammin’ band and these renowned artists each raise the roof and let loose in their own unique style. Supported by the California Arts Council.\n\nThe Dynamic Miss Faye Carol is known as an icon in the Bay Area and beyond\, highly regarded for her powerful voice\, astonishing versatility\, and gift of connecting with her audience. Equally at home in jazz\, blues\, R&B\, gospel\, funk\, latin\, and hip-hop\, she has developed her own authentic sound and unique delivery\, delighting audiences young and old across the globe. After beginning her career with gospel music\, Faye Carol made her name singing with Oakland blues and funk legend Johnny Talbot & De Thangs before forming her own trio and gaining fame in San Francisco’s jazz\, blues\, and cabaret clubs of the 1970s and 80s. Over a 60-year career in music\, this living legend has developed her own unique acoustic sound and style in Black Music – drawing from funk\, blues\, gospel\, and straight ahead swingin’ – and cultivated an audience that remains as diverse as her uplifting music. She has maintained a high level of musicianship in her groups\, mentoring some of the Bay Area’s brightest young talent including pianist Benny Green\, bassist/composer Marcus Shelby\, and her daughter\, pianist/composer Kito Kamili. Her vocal proteges include international superstars Kehlani and Ledisi.\n\nLady Bianca is a blues\, gospel\, and R&B vocalist/pianist\, artist\, and producer with roots in Kansas City\, MO.  Raised by a father who taught her Texas Blues piano as a child\, Bianca’s formal training began at age nine with the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.  Her exceptional talent garnered her a full four year scholarship and she went on to study music theory\, composition\, and received her operatic vocal and piano training.  Bianca’s first paying gig was at the age of seventeen with Quinn Harris & The Masterminds and it was Harris who bestowed the title of Lady on Bianca as she was “so pure and conservative”.  Since then\, Lady Bianca has evolved into an icon in the San Francisco Bay Area and is widely known as the “Queen of the Blues and Gospel”.  With her partner\, Stanley Lippitt\, she has amassed a catalog of over 300 songs\, and has produced\, arranged and recorded 9 albums\, via her own label\, Magic-O Records  – Home of the Mighty Oakland Sound.\n\nAlvon Johnson is one of the most versatile musicians\, singers\, and entertainers on the music scene today. He travels the world singing and swinging jazz standards with Big Bands. He also gallops the globe performing the songs that he performed while working with the rock and roll hall of fame group\, The Coasters. When he travels to Russia he is referred to as the “King of the Blues” and the “Ambassador of the Blues”. His love and respect for the American Art form is shared by large and enthusiastic audiences all over the world.\n\nAlabama Mike is a hard-driving blues singer who will remind you of the early original blues legends\, whom you may have heard on the Chess\, Duke\, Trumpet and Galaxy Record labels\, and even maybe some Elmore James\, Buddy Guy\, Little Junior Parker\, Little Johnny Taylor\, and BB King (in his early years). He can blaze up a good old blues shuffle and have you moving and grooving\, then effortlessly transport you through his unique style\, offering a soulful gospel tinged ballad\, and his jovial style of storytelling will send you through a range of exhilarating emotions.

SUMMARY:Sweetwater Music Hall presents Marshall Crenshaw with James Mastro
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1953 in Detroit\, Michigan\, Marshall Crenshaw learned to tune a guitar correctly at age ten and has been trying ever since. His first big break came in 1978 playing John Lennon in “Beatlemania”\, first as an understudy in New York\, then in the West Coast company followed by a national touring company. Removing himself from that situation in Feb. 1980\, Marshall settled in New York City. After crossing paths with the great and legendary Alan Betrock\, Marshall recorded his debut single “Something’s Gonna Happen” (for Betrock’s Shake Records label)\, which led to a deal with Warner Bros. His debut album\, Marshall Crenshaw\, was acclaimed as a masterpiece upon its release in 1982 and established him as a singular songwriter\, record maker\, and guitarist. The album spawned the hit single “Someday\, Someway\,” and other classics such as “(You’re My) Favorite Waste of Time\,” “Whenever You’re On My Mind” and “Cynical Girl.”\n\nOver the course of a career that’s spanned three decades\, 13 albums\, Grammy and Golden Globe nominations\, film and TV appearances (Buddy Holly in “La Bamba”) and thousands of performances\, Marshall Crenshaw’s musical output has maintained a consistent fidelity to the qualities of artfulness\, craftsmanship and passion\, and his efforts have been rewarded with the devotion of a broad and remarkably loyal fan base.\n\nAlong with touring around the country and the occasional recording project\, Marshall currently hosts his own radio show\, “The Bottomless Pit”\, every Saturday at 10 PM on New York’s WFUV. Other current projects include a documentary film-in progress about legendary record producer Tom Wilson. Says Crenshaw\, “This is a road that I never imagined taking before\, but it’s been amazing and is going great..”

SUMMARY:Sweetwater Music Hall presents George Porter Jr. and Runnin’ Pardners
DESCRIPTION:April 10 & 11 @ 8pm\n\nGeorge Porter Jr. is an award-winning bassist\, songwriter and vocalist. He is a founding member of New Orleans’ seminal funk band\, The Meters and widely recognized as one of the greatest bass players of all time. Formed alongside Art “Poppa Funk” Neville\, Leo Nocentelli and Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste\, the pioneering R&B funk outfit hit the scene on the streets of the Crescent City in the 1960s\, to ultimately become one of the progenitors of the funk music genre. The groundbreaking collective carved out syncopated polyrhythms and grooves inherited from New Orleans’ deep African musical roots. Porter’s heavy pocket and fat notes formed the rubbery bass lines behind funk classics like their signature “Cissy Strut\,” the now classic 1969 funk instrumental released as a single from their eponymous debut album\, which reached No. 4 on the R&B chart and No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 respectively. While the group rarely enjoyed massive mainstream success\, they are widely heralded alongside James Brown\, Sly Stone\, and George Clinton’s Parliament/Funkadelic as the founding fathers of funk. The Meters have been nominated four times for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (most recently in 2017) and were presented with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards in 2018.

SUMMARY:The Rock and Roll Playhouse plays Music of Bob Marley + More for Kids
DESCRIPTION:The Rock and Roll Playhouse\, a family concert series hosted at historic music venues across the country\, allows kids to “move\, play and sing while listening to works from the classic-rock canon” (NY Times). Performing songs created by the most iconic musicians in rock history\, The Rock and Roll Playhouse band offers its core audience of families with children age ten and under games\, movement\, stories and an opportunity to rock out in an effort to educate children and explore their creativity. The Rock and Roll Playhouse is an early and often first introduction to a child’s lifelong journey with live music and rock and roll. See you at the show! \nThis concert for kids and families shares the music of Bob Marley with a new generation of music lovers but is not associated with or endorsed by the artist. All children must be accompanied by a parent or adult caregiver.  \nThe Rock and Roll Playhouse knows that little ears are sensitive\, so we turn down the volume at our shows.  However\, all kids experience music differently and you may find that your child is more comfortable wearing hearing protection earmuffs.

SUMMARY:Sweetwater presents The High Green Chilly Winds
DESCRIPTION:The High Green Chilly Winds manage to channel that elusive Dead vibe uniquely\, with wide-open guitar tones\, effortless three-part vocal harmonies\, choogling beats\, and yes\, plenty of tripped out\, shredded solos. The look\, the sound\, the atmosphere is uncanny. Far from being a historical re-enactment\, this band’s laissez faire flow infuses the band with a gentle spirit\, warmth\, and (dare we say it) authenticity. From their killer merch game to their eminently watchable YouTube channel\, they’re clearly having a real good time spreading the love. Strangely enough\, in a world overflowing with wax museum nostalgia and Deadly sentimentalism\, we need the Chilly Winds\, now more than ever.

SUMMARY:Sweetwater presents El Radio Fantastique with Damma Damma
DESCRIPTION:El Radio Fantastique is a cinematic\, genre-bending band that defies classification. It is led by its founder\, Giovanni DiMorente. Channeling disparate past experiences as a grave digger\, dumpster diver\, and pop star (of the 80s band Times Two)\, DiMorente fancies and celebrates the broken and crooked\, the paradox of finding beauty in things unpleasant\, and he and his band celebrate them with sublime melody and raw emotion. \n\nDiMorente has been a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition (ISC)\, and not only writes songs for himself to sing\, but also for other vocalists in the band. Violinist Noelle Boucher and keyboardist Robin Livingston both step up to center stage to sing some of DiMorente’scompositions that he has tailored specifically for their individual singing styles\, one of which that was co-written by Livingston. Bassist Colin Schlitt is not only another lead singer\, but also an accomplished songwriter himself who sings his own original compositions in the band. With this wealth of songwriting\, El Radio Fantastique has well over 3 hours of original material at their disposal that encompasses multiple musical genres.

SUMMARY:Sweetwater presents Holly Bowling
DESCRIPTION:Whether behind the piano on a windswept mountainous cliff\, at a hallowed venue such as Carnegie Hall\, or playing shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the most legendary musicians in history\, solo pianist Holly Bowling subverts convention with virtuosic playing\, emotional immersion\, and a thirst for invention. Acclaimed by Rolling Stone\, Billboard\, Relix\, and more and sought-after by icons such as Phil Lesh\, Bob Weir\, and Warren Haynes\, she once again flips the script on her 2020 album and second reimagining of Grateful Dead staples entitled Seeking All That’s Still Unsung. \n“When you go to see someone play solo piano\, you’re not expecting them to stand up\, pluck the strings\, drum on the frame\, hit the strings with mallets\, or place magnets and EBows inside of the piano\,” she smiles. “It doesn’t fit with the expectations of how you’re supposed to play this instrument. I think it works though.”
