SUMMARY:The California Theatre presents San Fran Halen
DESCRIPTION:Van Halen took all the best elements of 60s and 70s rock\, fused them with the panache and pageantry of vaudeville\, shot them into orbit with high velocity guitar unlike the world had ever seen. From Runnin’ with the Devil to Jump\, they single-handedly saved hard rock and ushered in the glorious musical excesses of the 80s. \nSan Fran Halen is a group of San Francisco Bay Area pros who have joined the ranks of the world’s best Van Halen tributes to pay homage to the joy etched in the indelible grooves on the sacred platters we have cherished since childhood. Ryan Cominskey on drums\, Michael Freeman on bass\, Rob Spinosa on guitar\, and rock n roll ringmaster Mikki J. Fox have sworn on their honor to do their best to do their duty to bring the party to you like it’s 1984. It’s never too late to have a happy adolescence. \nOpening Act Illegitimate AC/DC is the North bay’s ultimate tribute to the greatest rock band ever\, AC/DC. The band highlights the Bon Scott era but steps into Brian Johnson territory as well. Fronted by Will Cotter and backed by 4 seasoned veterans of rock\, this act will make it seem like you’ve just seen the real deal\, 30 years ago.  \nThe band is committed to keeping the music true to form\, with no tricks or fancy effects\, just pure\, straight-up Rock and Roll.

SUMMARY:Sweetwater presents DirtySpoon with The Love Handles
DESCRIPTION:Dirtyspoon is arguably the most underrated\, most important and most beloved band in this entire bio.   Deftly (Deaf-ly?)\, navigating various genres \, the Dirtyspoon bus ride makes stops at 80s Alt\, Big Hair Spandex Metal\, Nostalgia Pop and Familiar Funk.  We believe that the key to a great party is getting the ladies on the dance floor.  And you know we’re right fellas.  Dirtyspoon recently underwent genetic testing and it turns out our ancestry includes Ska\, Reggae\, Country\, Nu Metal\, Hip Hop\, Emo\, ShoeGaze\, Pop and Blues. And Icelandic.  Dirtyspoon covers highly danceable hits from the 80s\, 90s but You Aughta Know that already.  We have been favorably compared to\, in no particular order\, the Joe Montana era 49ers\, a bottle of 1982 Mouton Rothschild and the second season of Hill Street Blues.  Equally comfortable covering Come on Eileen… Sweet Child of mine… And Uptown Funk … Dirtyspoon is the soundtrack to your misspent youth …missed opportunities …and the one who got away.

SUMMARY:Mystic Theatre presents Vieux Farka Touré
DESCRIPTION:Often referred to as “The Hendrix of the Sahara”\, Vieux Farka Touré was born in Niafunké\, Mali in 1981. He is the son of legendary Malian guitar player Ali Farka Touré\, who died in 2006. Ali Farka Touré came from a historical tribe of soldiers\, and defied his parents in becoming a musician. When Vieux was in his teens\, he declared that he also wanted to be a musician. His father disapproved due to the pressures he had experienced being a musician. Rather\, he wanted Vieux to become a soldier. But with help from family friend the kora maestro Toumani Diabaté\, Vieux eventually convinced his father to give him his blessing to become a musician shortly before Ali passed.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVieux was initially a drummer / calabash player at Mali’s Institut National des Arts but secretly began playing guitar in 2001. Ali Farka Touré was weakened with cancer when Vieux announced that he was going to record an album. Ali recorded a couple of tracks with him\, and these recordings\, which can be heard on Vieux’s debut CD\, were amongst his final ones. It has been said that the senior Touré played rough mixes of these songs when people visited him in his final days\, at peace with\, and proud of\, his son’s talent as a musician. \nAs a passionate champion for the people of Mali and The Sahel\, Vieux founded the charity Amahrec Sahel in 2012. As part of Amahrec Sahel’s mission to support humanitarian reconstruction and culture\, the charity has provided school supplies for children\, supported an orphanage in Bamako and provided musical instruments for young musicians in Mali. Vieux is also the director of The Ali Farka Touré Foundation\, an international organization dedicated to the preservation of Ali’s legacy and the cultural growth of Mali.

SUMMARY:Uptown Theatre presents A Flock of Seagulls
DESCRIPTION:As well-known for their bizarrely teased haircuts as their hit single “I Ran (So Far Away)\,” A Flock of Seagulls were one of the infamous one-hit wonders of the new wave era. Growing out of the synth-heavy and ruthlessly stylish new romantic movement\, A Flock of Seagulls were a little too robotic and arrived a little too late to be true new romantics\, but their sleek dance-pop was forever indebted to the short-lived movement. The group benefitted considerably from MTV’s heavy rotation of the “I Ran” video in the summer of 1982. \nHairdresser Mike Score (lead vocals\, keyboards) formed A Flock of Seagulls with his brother Ali (drums) and fellow hairdresser Frank Maudsley (bass) in 1980\, adding guitarist Paul Reynolds several months later. The group released its debut EP on Cocteau Records early i n 1981\, and while the record failed to chart\, its lead track\, “Telecommunication\,” became an underground hit in Euro-disco and new wave clubs. The band signed a major-label contract with Jive by the end of the year\, and their eponymous debut album appeared in the spring of 1982. “I Ran (So Far Away)” was released as the first single from the album\, and MTV quickly picked up on its icily attractive video\, which featured long shots of Mike Score and his distinctive\, cascading hair. The single climbed into the American Top Ten\, taking the album along with it. In the U.K.\, “I Ran” didn’t make the Top 40\, but “Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)” reached number ten later that year; in America\, that single became a Top 40 hit in 1983\, after “Space Age Love Song” peaked at number 30. “Wishing” was taken from the group’s second album\, Listen (1983)\, which was moderately successful. The band released 1984’s The Story of a Young Heart failed to produce any hit singles but Reynolds left after the album and was replaced by Gary Steadnin; the band also added keyboardist Chris Chryssaphis. The new lineup was showcased on 1986’s Dream Come True. Shortly after its release\, the band broke up. Mike Score assembled a new lineup of A Flock of Seagulls in 1989\, releasing the single “Magic” and touring the U.S.A. The band continued to tour worldwide\, although with major changes to its members\, and in 1996 released a new album\, The Light at the End of the World.

SUMMARY:Mystic Theatre presents Stick Men
DESCRIPTION:Stick Men is a powerhouse progressive rock trio featuring legendary musicians Tony Levin\, Pat Mastelotto\, and Markus Reuter. With a combined experience of over 100 million records sold worldwide\, this supergroup brings unparalleled musicianship and innovation to every performance. \nTony Levin\, renowned for his work with Peter Gabriel and King Crimson\, is one of the most recorded bass players in music history. His mastery of the Chapman Stick\, from which the band takes its name\, allows him to cover both bass and guitar parts simultaneously. \nPat Mastelotto\, drummer extraordinaire\, is known for his tenure with King Crimson and chart- topping success with Mr. Mister. His unique setup combines acoustic drums with electronic elements\, creating a rich tapestry of rhythms and textures. \nMarkus Reuter rounds out the trio with his self-designed touch-style guitar\, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible on a stringed instrument. His innovative approach complements the group’s progressive sound. \nStick Men’s music defies easy categorization\, blending elements of Art Rock\, Progressive Rock\, and at times Progressive Meta. Their live shows are a testament to their improvisational prowess\, featuring extended jams that showcase each member’s virtuosity. The band also pays homage to their King Crimson roots by performing select pieces from that legendary group’s catalog. \nStick Men continues to evolve and push the boundaries of progressive rock. Their unique instrumentation and combined centuries of experience make for an unforgettable live experience that will captivate audiences and leave them in awe of the trio’s musical mastery.
