SUMMARY:Marin Theatre presents The White Chip
DESCRIPTION:Success seems to come easily to Steven McAlister. Charismatic and constantly in motion\, he’s built a life that looks enviable from the outside — complete with a dream job at a prestigious theatre. But from his very first drink at 12\, it’s clear he has been lying to himself for years. Equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking\, this “recovery comedy” unfolds from Steven’s own disarmingly candid and charmingly funny perspective. Named for the tokens given in Alcoholics Anonymous to mark the beginning of sobriety\, The White Chip follows Steven as he barrels through the highs\, lows\, and spectacular missteps of addiction\, telling a story about the courage to start over\, one day at a time. Marin Theatre Artistic Director Lance Gardner helms this production. \n\nThis play is recommended for ages 13 and up. \n \nAdvisory Warning: Water-Based Haze\, Strobe Lights

SUMMARY:Raven Performing Arts Theater presents macbitches
DESCRIPTION:macbitches takes a darkly funny look at the toxic\, high-stakes world of university theater\, centering on a freshman who unexpectedly lands the role of Lady Macbeth. The play centers on freshman acting major Hailey\, who unexpectedly scores the coveted role of Lady Macbeth. Her upperclassmen rivals immediately invite her over to “celebrate.” As the Fireball and Svedka flow\, the young women interrogate their own ambitions as well as the power structures that have shaped their education—and when the night spirals into violent and shocking acts of betrayal\, they come to learn that what’s done cannot be undone. \nWritten by Sophie McIntosh\nDirected by Jeanette Seisdedos

SUMMARY:Novato Theater company presents Spelling Bee
DESCRIPTION:An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives\, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words\, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing\, pout-inducing\, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box. A riotous ride\, complete with audience participation\, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a delightful den of comedic genius.

SUMMARY:The California Theatre presents Spike Sikes and His Awesome Hotcakes
DESCRIPTION:Spike Sikes\, Awesome Hotcakes\, and a whole lot of music! With the perfect recipe of soul\, swing\, R&B\, jazz\, it’s going to be cooking down at The Cal! \nJust The Right Recipe… The most frequently heard comment after a Spike’s Awesome Hotcakes gig goes something like this – \n“No one is making this kind of music anymore!” \nBut what\, exactly\, is “this kind of music?” \nLike hotcakes themselves\, it goes by many names. Soul. Swing. Rhythm & Blues. Jazz. Jump. It’s a sound that’s classic and simple\, but when it’s done right\, it hits the spot\, and has you grinning from ear to ear. Spike has spent years searching for this sound. \nFrom the Texas blues joints he cut his teeth in to the funky halls of New Orleans\, he was always studying the music\, trying to find just the right recipe. It makes perfect sense that he found his bandmates in Sonoma County\, a music scene that has fostered many eclectic artists for decades.

SUMMARY:Uptown Theatre presents A Flock of Seagulls
DESCRIPTION:As well-known for their bizarrely teased haircuts as their hit single “I Ran (So Far Away)\,” A Flock of Seagulls were one of the infamous one-hit wonders of the new wave era. Growing out of the synth-heavy and ruthlessly stylish new romantic movement\, A Flock of Seagulls were a little too robotic and arrived a little too late to be true new romantics\, but their sleek dance-pop was forever indebted to the short-lived movement. The group benefitted considerably from MTV’s heavy rotation of the “I Ran” video in the summer of 1982. \nHairdresser Mike Score (lead vocals\, keyboards) formed A Flock of Seagulls with his brother Ali (drums) and fellow hairdresser Frank Maudsley (bass) in 1980\, adding guitarist Paul Reynolds several months later. The group released its debut EP on Cocteau Records early i n 1981\, and while the record failed to chart\, its lead track\, “Telecommunication\,” became an underground hit in Euro-disco and new wave clubs. The band signed a major-label contract with Jive by the end of the year\, and their eponymous debut album appeared in the spring of 1982. “I Ran (So Far Away)” was released as the first single from the album\, and MTV quickly picked up on its icily attractive video\, which featured long shots of Mike Score and his distinctive\, cascading hair. The single climbed into the American Top Ten\, taking the album along with it. In the U.K.\, “I Ran” didn’t make the Top 40\, but “Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)” reached number ten later that year; in America\, that single became a Top 40 hit in 1983\, after “Space Age Love Song” peaked at number 30. “Wishing” was taken from the group’s second album\, Listen (1983)\, which was moderately successful. The band released 1984’s The Story of a Young Heart failed to produce any hit singles but Reynolds left after the album and was replaced by Gary Steadnin; the band also added keyboardist Chris Chryssaphis. The new lineup was showcased on 1986’s Dream Come True. Shortly after its release\, the band broke up. Mike Score assembled a new lineup of A Flock of Seagulls in 1989\, releasing the single “Magic” and touring the U.S.A. The band continued to tour worldwide\, although with major changes to its members\, and in 1996 released a new album\, The Light at the End of the World.

SUMMARY:Luther Burbank Center presents 50th San Francisco Comedy Competition Semi-Finals
DESCRIPTION:One of the most prestigious comedy events in North America\, the San Francisco Comedy Competition is an outrageously funny evening\, where you will see the comedy stars of tomorrow competing for their chance at fame and fortune. Hundreds of comedians audition each year. Only 30 are chosen. \nMany talented comedians have since emerged from this annual event to become major stars. The Comedy Competition develops its contestants by forcing them to adjust to a variety of audiences—comedy clubs\, colleges\, casinos\, and theaters—while enduring the strain of an extended road trip. \n1977 Comedy Competition Champ Dana Carvey went on to “Saturday Night Live.” 1979 Champ Marsha Warfield went on to “Night Court” to star as Roz the bailiff. 1982 finalist Kevin Pollak has achieved a major film career\, as has 1987 finalist Rob Schneider. Two first runners up\, Ellen DeGeneres in 1985 and Mark Curry in 1989\, landed their own TV series. \nWith this history\, the San Francisco Comedy Competition has earned its reputation as an important showcase of young entertainers who will make it. \nGenerous underwriting provided by Lise L. Luttgens and Richard R. Johnson
