DESCRIPTION:The Young People’s Chamber Orchestra is a youth string orchestra working without a conductor. It is modeled after the Bay Area’s renowned New Century Chamber Orchestra and is the first youth ensemble of its kind in northern California. Currently under the direction of Aaron Westman\, the orchestra has been featured as a guest on a New Century Chamber Orchestra performance and has been a winner of the Berkeley Junior Bach Festival.  \nThe Santa Rosa Symphony Institute for Music Education: Santa Rosa Symphony Youth Ensembles’ mission is to offer young musicians an exceptional educational experience by providing the finest quality orchestral training and performance opportunities in Sonoma County. Our goal is for young musicians to develop an awareness and appreciation of great music in the context of learning responsibility and teamwork\, while they participate in our community through public\nperformance. Students can begin instruments as young as five years old at our Summer Music Academy\, and remain in our training programs as they excel\, into their first years of college.

DESCRIPTION:Singer/songwriter Vanessa Collier’s sixth album Do It My Own Way was recorded on analog gear with the musicians largely in one room. Do It My Own Way is sonically inspired by the classic Memphis soul sound of Stax and Hi Records\, especially that of the Staples Singers. Second single “Wild As a Rainstorm\,” which dives deep into soul territory\, powerfully gives advice to women and people who feel left out to ignore the naysayers and “Be a tapestry of dreams.” The track been added to Spotify’s official Retro Soul playlist. The groove and horns would make Willie Mitchell proud\, and indeed features legendary Hi Records organist Rev. Charles Hodges. The vocals are powerful\, awe-inspiring\, and undeniably soulful vocals.  \nTalking about the album\, Collier adds\, “It’s a warmer and darker sounding a record\, recorded intentionally to reflect a throwback to older school soul\, R&B\, blues\, and to the days of great songs and songwriters\, tube amps and analog gear.”  \nDo It My Own Way takes listeners back to the heyday of music with Memphis soul-influenced horn arrangements\, layers of vocals for color\, with poignant and powerful saxophone solos that deliver a quietly powerful undercurrent to each song and the album as a whole. Minor key Americana/noir “Take Me Back” served as the first single. The album kicks off with the funk workout “Elbow Grease.” On an album full of incredible grooves\, “Shoulda Known Better” stands out while “Just One More” sways toa rhumba beat.  \nThe gospel-tinged “Rosetta” pays tribute to one of Collier’s heroes\, electric guitar pioneer Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Collier sings\, “She’s carried the torch so I can see a little bit better… There’d be no Elvis or Chuck Berry. Sometimes the women do it best. She tackled all the inequities. And fought with strength and audacity.”

DESCRIPTION:The Expendables have proven anything but in their nearly 25-year career since starting out as a spirited party band in high school performing surf-rock covers for birthdays and family gatherings. A quarter-century later\, elementary school buddies Raul Bianchi\, Adam Peterson and Geoff Weers\, along with bassist Ryan DeMars\, who joined in 2000\, have forged a unique sound born in the laid-back beach life in their hometown of Santa Cruz\, CA. The Expendables’ infectious hybrid of ska\, surf-rock\, punk\, reggae and metal can be heard in their latest streaming track\, “Surfman Cometh\,” a spaghetti-western meets “Pipeline” twang that could easily form the soundtrack to the latest Quentin Tarantino film. The song is the first release from the group’s new and improved Band Room\, their longtime rehearsal space in a 1\,100 square foot warehouse and former wine cellar on Coral Street\, where Adam Patterson took charge of the final mix to great effect. The band’s previous studio album of original material\, 2015’s Sand in the Sky\, was followed by The Expendables’ second release featuring acoustic reworkings of past material\, Gone Raw\, 2019’s follow-up to 2012’s Gone Soft. The Expendables continue woodshedding until they can get back out on the road. Their 2017 Moment EP\, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Reggae chart\, showed the band starting to move into different musical directions\, a set featuring collaborations with reggae crooner HIRIE\, rapper Tech N9ne\, Eric Rachmany\, and Micah Peuschel.
