SUMMARY:Green Music Center presents San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus Dolly! A Pride Show
DESCRIPTION:Rhinestones. Wigs. Heart. The icon\, the legend\, Dolly Parton is our muse for Pride this year. She taught us how to be unapologetically ourselves\, lead with kindness\, and play a guitar with acrylics on. She’s inspired a new generation of misfits\, dreamers\, and drag queens with her iconic looks\, only to be outshined by her message of radical compassion. Did someone say Dolly look-alike contest? Come dressed ready to SHINE!

SUMMARY:The California Theatre presents Gary Numan with support from TREMOURS
DESCRIPTION:May\, 1979. It’s an ordinary Thursday evening\, which means it’s time for Top of the Pops. Amidst a zeitgeist of punk and disco\, the show suddenly appears to be interrupted by a transmission from the future. A luminous synth riff echoes out\, a beat drives on and up steps an otherworldly figure – part robot\, part alien – to deliver an enigmatic lyric depicting some kind of android existence in a dystopian future. It’s Gary Numan fronting Tubeway Army for their breakthrough hit ‘Are ‘Friends’ Electric?’. \nOf the millions that are watching\, few would’ve recognized that this moment foreshadows the shape of music to come\, from synth-pop to industrial and alt-pop. That\, however\, can’t stop it igniting the imagination of an audience that would swell into a devoted following. \nFast-forward to January\, 2021. Numan’s first single ‘Intruder’ (from the Intruder album) pulsates ominously as if it’s soundtracking an imminent threat. As austere synths loom like shadows and industrial beats are detonated\, the beguiling hook towers like a beacon in the darkness. It’s visionary and venomous\, with a narrative that imagines the Earth growing angry at mankind’s actions\, and more than willing to fight back. In the accompanying video\, Numan looks even more out of time than he did back in 1979\, like an intergalactic refugee fighting for his own existence.

SUMMARY:Sweetwater Music Hall presents Marshall Crenshaw with James Mastro
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1953 in Detroit\, Michigan\, Marshall Crenshaw learned to tune a guitar correctly at age ten and has been trying ever since. His first big break came in 1978 playing John Lennon in “Beatlemania”\, first as an understudy in New York\, then in the West Coast company followed by a national touring company. Removing himself from that situation in Feb. 1980\, Marshall settled in New York City. After crossing paths with the great and legendary Alan Betrock\, Marshall recorded his debut single “Something’s Gonna Happen” (for Betrock’s Shake Records label)\, which led to a deal with Warner Bros. His debut album\, Marshall Crenshaw\, was acclaimed as a masterpiece upon its release in 1982 and established him as a singular songwriter\, record maker\, and guitarist. The album spawned the hit single “Someday\, Someway\,” and other classics such as “(You’re My) Favorite Waste of Time\,” “Whenever You’re On My Mind” and “Cynical Girl.”\n\nOver the course of a career that’s spanned three decades\, 13 albums\, Grammy and Golden Globe nominations\, film and TV appearances (Buddy Holly in “La Bamba”) and thousands of performances\, Marshall Crenshaw’s musical output has maintained a consistent fidelity to the qualities of artfulness\, craftsmanship and passion\, and his efforts have been rewarded with the devotion of a broad and remarkably loyal fan base.\n\nAlong with touring around the country and the occasional recording project\, Marshall currently hosts his own radio show\, “The Bottomless Pit”\, every Saturday at 10 PM on New York’s WFUV. Other current projects include a documentary film-in progress about legendary record producer Tom Wilson. Says Crenshaw\, “This is a road that I never imagined taking before\, but it’s been amazing and is going great..”

SUMMARY:Sweetwater Music Hall presents George Porter Jr. and Runnin’ Pardners
DESCRIPTION:April 10 & 11 @ 8pm\n\nGeorge Porter Jr. is an award-winning bassist\, songwriter and vocalist. He is a founding member of New Orleans’ seminal funk band\, The Meters and widely recognized as one of the greatest bass players of all time. Formed alongside Art “Poppa Funk” Neville\, Leo Nocentelli and Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste\, the pioneering R&B funk outfit hit the scene on the streets of the Crescent City in the 1960s\, to ultimately become one of the progenitors of the funk music genre. The groundbreaking collective carved out syncopated polyrhythms and grooves inherited from New Orleans’ deep African musical roots. Porter’s heavy pocket and fat notes formed the rubbery bass lines behind funk classics like their signature “Cissy Strut\,” the now classic 1969 funk instrumental released as a single from their eponymous debut album\, which reached No. 4 on the R&B chart and No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 respectively. While the group rarely enjoyed massive mainstream success\, they are widely heralded alongside James Brown\, Sly Stone\, and George Clinton’s Parliament/Funkadelic as the founding fathers of funk. The Meters have been nominated four times for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (most recently in 2017) and were presented with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards in 2018.

SUMMARY:JaM Cellars Presents Richard Thompson with Zara Phillips
DESCRIPTION:Richard Thompson’s musical influence cannot be overstated. Having co-founded the groundbreaking group Fairport Convention as a teenager in the ‘60s\, he and his bandmates invented the distinctive strain of British Folk Rock. He left the group by the age of 21 which was followed by a decade long musical partnership with his then-wife Linda\, to over 30 years as a highly successful solo artist. \nIn 2011\, Thompson received an OBE (Order of the British Empire) personally bestowed upon him by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. The Los Angeles Times called him “the finest rock songwriter after Dylan and the best electric guitarist since Hendrix” and Rolling Stone has named him one of the Top 100 Guitarists of All Time. He has received lifetime achievement awards for songwriting from the BBC Radio 2 Awards\, the Americana Music Association\, and was awarded the prestigious Ivor Novello Award. His song “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” was named one of TIME Magazine’s “100 Greatest Songs Since 1923.” \nA wide range of musicians have recorded Thompson’s songs including Robert Plant\, Elvis Costello\, R.E.M.\, Sleater-Kinney\, Del McCoury\, Bonnie Raitt\, Tom Jones\, David Byrne\, Don Henley\, Los Lobos\, and many more. His massive body of work includes many Grammy nominated albums as well as numerous soundtracks\, including Werner Herzog’s Grizzly Man and 2019’s The Cold Blue. His genre defying mastery of both acoustic and electric guitar along with engaging energy and onstage wit continue to earn him new fans and a place as one of the most distinctive virtuosos and writers in Folk Rock history. \nZara Phillips is a singer and songwriter\, actor\, author\, and activist. As an adoptee herself\, much of her work is centered around the adoption world and is focused on improving understanding the lifelong impact of adoption. She is a mother of three and tours with her husband\, musician Richard Thompson. She divides her time between London and New Jersey.

SUMMARY:Mystic Theatre presents Paul Thorn
DESCRIPTION:When it comes to songwriting\, less is more\, and simplicity is strength. Just ask Paul Thorn\, who’s spent three decades turning soulful grooves and small syllables into songs that pack a big wallop. Maybe he learned the power of minimalism from his years as a pro boxer; maybe it just comes naturally. But whether he’s targeting heads\, hearts\, hips or the occasional funny bone\, he somehow manages to condense large nuggets of wisdom into tight little mantras\, the kind embroiderers stitched onto pillows before internet memes existed.   \nThorn’s new album\, Life is Just A Vapor\, contains some beauties: “Life is a vapor\, let’s live it while we can”; “tough times don’t last\, but tough people do” (from “Tough Times Don’t Last”); “any mountain up ahead is just a hill” (from “Old Melodies”). They’re words of advice\, comfort\, support\, encouragement\, often meant to uplift\, especially in times of struggle.   \n“I like for people to be touched by music and get something from it\, something that they can take with them throughout the day\,” Thorn says. “Every song on this album\, there’s a message in it of some sort about how to live life.”  \nAmerican Blues Scene writer Don Wilcock calls Thorn “an everyman (who) addresses things we all think about\, but few can articulate with the kind of candor\, humor and folksy truth that immediately endear him to almost everyone lucky enough to hear his music.”

SUMMARY:JaM Cellars presents The English Beat
DESCRIPTION:The English Beat is a band with an energetic mix of musical styles and a sound like no other. The band’s unique sound has allowed it to endure for nearly four decades and appeal to fans\, young and old\, all over the world. \nWhen The English Beat (known as The Beat in their native England) rushed on to the music scene in 1979\, it was a time of massive social and political unrest and economic and musical upheaval. This set the stage for a period of unbridled musical creativity\, and thanks in large part to the Punk movement and it’s DIY approach to making music\, artists like The Beat were able to speak out and speak their mind on the news of the day\, as in “Stand Down Margaret”\, things that mattered to them and the youth culture\, as in “Get A Job”\, and universal matters of the heart and soul\, as in their classic hits “I Confess” and “Save It For Later”. \nThe Beat first came to prominence as founding members of the British Two Tone Ska movement\, with their classic first album “Just Can’t Stop It” fitting squarely in that genre. Along with their contemporaries The Specials\, The Selecter\, and Madness\, the band became an overnight sensation and one of the most popular and influential bands of that movement. \nHowever\, band leader Dave Wakeling never felt constrained by the movement. The band crossed over fluidly between soul\, reggae\, pop and punk\, and from these disparate pieces they created an infectious dance rhythm. \nThe band’s sound continued to evolve over their three studio albums\, through the General Public era (a band formed by Dave with The Beat’s toaster\, Ranking Roger)\, and it has continued its evolution with the forthcoming English Beat album “Here We Go Love”\, a PledgeMusic crowd-funded album set for a 2016 release\, the band’s first new album since 1982’s “Special Beat Service”. \nConsummate showman that he is\, Dave Wakeling continues to keep The Beat alive and strong\, touring the world as The English Beat with an amazing all-star ska backing band playing all the hits of The Beat\, General Public\, and songs from his new album “Here We Go Love”.

SUMMARY:The Rock and Roll Playhouse plays Music of Bob Marley + More for Kids
DESCRIPTION:The Rock and Roll Playhouse\, a family concert series hosted at historic music venues across the country\, allows kids to “move\, play and sing while listening to works from the classic-rock canon” (NY Times). Performing songs created by the most iconic musicians in rock history\, The Rock and Roll Playhouse band offers its core audience of families with children age ten and under games\, movement\, stories and an opportunity to rock out in an effort to educate children and explore their creativity. The Rock and Roll Playhouse is an early and often first introduction to a child’s lifelong journey with live music and rock and roll. See you at the show! \nThis concert for kids and families shares the music of Bob Marley with a new generation of music lovers but is not associated with or endorsed by the artist. All children must be accompanied by a parent or adult caregiver.  \nThe Rock and Roll Playhouse knows that little ears are sensitive\, so we turn down the volume at our shows.  However\, all kids experience music differently and you may find that your child is more comfortable wearing hearing protection earmuffs.
